Student answer (Band 7.0)

The majority of individuals believe that it is easy to identify a person's religion and behaviour from their choice of dress. I disagree with this opinion and will discuss it briefly in the following paragraphs, with relevant examples.

To commence with, in this modern era, it is very hard for everyone to recognise an individual's behaviour and culture on the basis of their dressing sense. To elaborate on this, in the past, most of the girls who belonged to the Muslim religion wore the Hijab because they were not allowed to reveal their faces in front of society. So, at that time it was easy to tell a lot about a person's culture, but nowadays not all Muslim girls wear the Hijab. For example, I work in a grocery store, and some Muslim girls work in my store, but they do not wear the Hijab, and when I first saw them, I felt they are Christian's. I was wrong at that time. Hence, nowadays it is so difficult to tell about a person's choice just by seeing their clothes.

Apart from that, in India, it is the mentality of individuals that girls who prefer short clothes are characterless because they are not open minded, there culture does not allow them to wear these types of clothes. But in other developed countries, they do not care; girls wear short dresses; they do not judge them based on their appearance. Moreover, nowadays, people wear comfortable clothes in which they feel relaxed and confident. Women are also working; most of the workplaces have their own dress code, and everyone is supposed to follow these codes, so at that time it is hard to recognise culture because all the staff wear the same type of clothes. Thus, dresses do not identify the character of the person.

In conclusion, in the past, it was easy to tell about a person's culture and character from their choice of clothes, but in this modern era, it is a very difficult task because now the standard of living has changed, and wear those clothes in which they feel comfortable.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a disagreement with the premise. The ideas are relevant and supported by personal examples, such as the observation of colleagues in a grocery store and cultural perceptions in India. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas could be more sophisticated; for instance, the argument regarding workplace dress codes is a strong point but could be expanded further to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, though it is slightly repetitive. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as the evolution of religious attire or the impact of professional dress codes. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Apart from that', and 'Moreover', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more fluid. For example, the transition between the discussion of religious attire and the Indian cultural context is a bit abrupt. Despite this, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses terms like 'modern era', 'mentality', and 'professional dress code' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Christian's' (should be 'Christians') and 'there culture' (should be 'their culture'), which are grammatical/spelling slips rather than purely lexical issues. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise, less common vocabulary to express nuanced ideas. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('most of the workplaces have their own dress code... so at that time it is hard') and punctuation errors. The use of articles and possessive pronouns is occasionally inconsistent, such as 'there culture' instead of 'their culture'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the reader can follow the argument without difficulty. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors would improve the score.
