Student answer (Band 8.0)
Some people believe that it is possible to learn a great deal about a person's culture and character from the clothes they choose to wear. I partly agree with this view. While clothing can reveal aspects of a person's background and personality, it is not always a reliable indicator because fashion choices are influenced by many other factors.
On the one hand, clothing often reflects cultural identity and personal values. Traditional garments such as the Japanese kimono, the Indian sari, or the Scottish kilt can indicate a person's cultural heritage or their desire to preserve cultural traditions. Likewise, people may wear religious clothing, such as a hijab or a turban, to express their beliefs and identity. In terms of character, someone who dresses neatly and professionally may appear organized and disciplined, while individuals who prefer bold colors or unique styles may seem creative and confident. Therefore, clothing can provide useful clues about who a person is.
On the other hand, judging someone's culture or character solely by their appearance can be misleading. Many people wear clothes simply because they are comfortable, affordable, or fashionable, rather than because they reflect their personality or cultural background. Global fashion trends have also made clothing styles increasingly similar across different countries, making it difficult to identify a person's culture based on what they wear. Furthermore, first impressions are not always accurate. A person dressed casually may be highly responsible and hardworking, while someone wearing expensive clothing may not necessarily possess positive personal qualities.
In conclusion, although clothing can offer some insight into a person's culture and character, it should not be regarded as a definitive measure. People's personalities and cultural identities are far more complex than their outward appearance, and it is important to avoid making quick judgments based solely on what they wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt by presenting a balanced view. Your position is clear from the introduction, and you provide relevant, well-developed arguments for both sides. The examples provided, such as the Japanese kimono and the Scottish kilt, effectively support your points. The conclusion synthesizes your arguments well, maintaining a consistent stance throughout. The ideas are extended and supported logically, meeting the criteria for a high band score by providing a thoughtful exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the 'on the one hand' and 'on the other hand' arguments is smooth. You use cohesive devices such as 'likewise', 'furthermore', and 'in conclusion' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the relationship between sentences is clear. The flow of the argument is natural and easy to follow, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'cultural heritage', 'reliable indicator', and 'definitive measure' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the context, it is functional rather than highly sophisticated or idiomatic. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more nuanced collocations or less common lexical items to add depth to your analysis. However, the current range is more than adequate for clear and effective communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your writing displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'While clothing can reveal...', 'although clothing can offer...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of grammatical accuracy, which is consistent with a high band score.
