Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, many people believe that a persons culture and personality can be understood by looking at their choice of clothes. However, I disagree with this view because clothing choices are influenced by many other factors, such as personal preferences, occasions, and modern trends.

firstly, in todays world, people do not always wear clothes that represent culture. Many individuals prefer modern fashion because of globalisation and changing lifestyles. For example, a person from a traditional background may wear westernstyle clothes in their daily life but still strongly follow their cultural values and traditions. Therefore, it is not accurate to judge someone culture only by their appearance.

Furthermore, clothes do not always reflect a persons character. People choose their outfits base on different situations, such as work, social events, or comfort. Some people enjoy wearing fashionable clothes because they have an interest in fashion, while others may prefer simple clothing due to their personal choice. These decisions do not necessarily show whether someone is kind confident, or responsible.

In conclusion, although clothing can sometimes provide information about a person cultural background or interests, I believe it is not possible to understand someones culture and character completely from their clothes. A persons behaviour and actions are much better indicators of their personality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding globalisation and situational clothing are relevant, they are not sufficiently extended or supported with detailed examples. The conclusion is brief and lacks depth. To improve, you must expand your arguments with more specific illustrations or personal experiences to meet the word count and demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'firstly', 'furthermore', and 'in conclusion' to signal the progression of your argument. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing, while present, could be more sophisticated. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels somewhat underdeveloped due to the brevity of the response. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that your ideas transition more smoothly between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'globalisation', 'traditional background', and 'indicators'. However, there are some minor errors in word formation and punctuation, such as 'persons' instead of 'person's' and 'base' instead of 'based'. The vocabulary is functional but lacks the range of less common or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the response to a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in your word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although clothing can sometimes provide information... I believe it is not possible...'. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors, including missing possessive apostrophes ('someone culture', 'person cultural background') and a missing comma in a list ('kind confident, or responsible'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on mastering punctuation, particularly apostrophes, and aim for more consistent accuracy in complex sentence construction.
