Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few individuals believe that it is easy to tell a lot about people’s culture and personality from their preference of attires. I partially disagree with this statement due to some reasons which will be discussed in the paragraphs.

On the one hand, there are numerous causes why it is possible to know about person’s culture and character through their clothes. First and foremost, nowadays most of the individuals intentionally wear their traditional clothes when they are visiting another countries to promote their culture or tradition. For example, in some parts of Indian women wear saree or salwar kameez and whenever they visit other countries, they carry these clothes with themselves so that they can wear them in their trips. As a result, anyone can guess their country easily. Moreover, if anyone loves to wear stylish clothes and follow trends, it means they have interest in fashion industry and desire to become model or famous in his or life. Hence, these are reasons why it is possible to judge some from their garments.

On the other hand, sometimes it’s totally opposite from what we see because there are various sectors in which a person has to dress-up nicely or formally to put good impression on others; however, in reality they have a different personality and do not prefer to wear formal clothes. For instance, a survey by BBC News reported that 70% of people wear formal attires in offices, but at home they love to wear comfortable clothes such as pyjamas and t-shirts.

To recapitulate, although one can easily know about person’s tradition from their attires; however, I personally believe that it is very difficult to tell a lot about individual’s character because sometimes people wear clothes according to occasion and their work demand but in reality they have a opposite character.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is partially disagreeing with the statement. The ideas are relevant, such as the use of traditional clothing to signal culture and the influence of professional requirements on dress code. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about fashion trends and the desire to become a model is a bit tangential and not fully explored in relation to 'character'. While the position is maintained throughout, the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'To recapitulate' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the conclusion: 'although one can easily know... however, I personally believe'. The use of 'however' after 'although' is redundant and creates a slight mechanical feel to the sentence structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'traditional clothes', 'formal attires', and 'fashion industry'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'preference of attires' (should be 'preference in attire' or 'choice of clothing') and 'do not prefer to wear formal clothes' (should be 'do not prefer wearing'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'visiting another countries' (should be 'other countries'), 'in some parts of Indian women wear' (should be 'in some parts of India, women wear'), and 'have a opposite character' (should be 'have an opposite character'). While these errors are frequent, they do not impede communication. The control of articles and pluralization is inconsistent, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band for grammatical accuracy.
