Student answer (Band 6.5)

A few individuals contend that culture and character of people can be learned by their apparel. I agree with the standpoint and will discuss the viewpoints.

To commence with, clothes have been associated with culture from the very early days of mankind. Historically, clothes were used by people to distinguish themselves from others. Military uniforms have some unique elements so that they can look different from their opponents. Furthermore, diverse section of the society living in a single country also use different clothing to promote their culture. For example, in India, People from Himalayan belt wear a special type of cap which describes that they are from hilly area. Moreover, people in the eastern part of the world prefer to wear more sophisticated clothes, covering whole body such as burkhas, kurta pyjama or a saree. On the contrary, western culture people wear more revealing cloths such as shorts, bikinis and one-piece dresses.

In addition to this, clothes also reveal characters of a person. Some people dress up smartly even at home while others wear loose cloths to feel relaxed. Properly dressed individuals have a serious character. On the other hand, if a person wears loose or unmatched pair of clothes then they may have a casual or careless character. To exemplify, some corporate employees wear formals everyday. They look more professional with a string character whereas some wear casual clothes such as a pair of jean and tee shirt. The latter one depicts a more casual and friendly character.

To recapitulate, this essay has discussed that people wear different cloths to promote their culture and look different from others. It has also explained how apparel reveals their characters.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant, with examples provided for both culture and character. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between clothing and 'character' is a bit simplistic, relying on stereotypes (e.g., 'loose clothes' implying a 'careless character'). To reach a higher band, you should explore the nuances of these arguments rather than relying on generalizations. The conclusion is also quite brief and merely restates the introduction without adding any final insight or synthesis of the points discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In addition to this,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'apparel,' 'sophisticated,' and 'professional.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor spelling errors, such as 'cloths' instead of 'clothes' (used multiple times) and 'string character' (likely meant 'strong'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your expression. To improve, focus on mastering common collocations and ensuring the correct spelling of key terms related to the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent minor grammatical errors, such as 'western culture people' (should be 'people in western cultures') and 'The latter one depicts' (should be 'The latter depicts'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the control over articles and pluralization is inconsistent. The majority of sentences are understandable, but the presence of these recurring errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
