Student answer (Band 8.0)
The way we dress is a crucial aspect of our everyday life. Some people believe that an individual's choice of clothing can reveal a lot about their cultural background and character. I completely agree with this statement as I believe that clothes serve more than just the practical purpose of covering our bodies; they are a reflection of our personality and culture.
To commence with, the type of clothing someone wears can provide insight into their cultural background. Every culture has its unique dress code, which signifies its traditions and beliefs. For instance, in India, women wear sarees, salwar kameez, and lehengas, while men wear dhoti kurta, sherwani, or suits on formal occasions. In contrast, in Western countries, people usually wear suits, skirts, and trousers. Therefore, by observing someone's clothing, we can determine their cultural background, which in turn can help us understand their beliefs and values.
Furthermore, a person's clothes can also indicate their character traits. The way someone dresses can show their level of confidence, professionalism, and creativity. For instance, a person who dresses professionally in clean, ironed clothes portrays confidence and respectability. On the other hand, someone who wears bright, colourful clothes indicates a creative and flamboyant personality. Therefore, clothes serve as a nonverbal way of communicating someone's personality traits, and we can make judgments based on this observation.
In conclusion, I believe that an individual's choice of clothing can tell a lot about their culture and personality. Clothing can reveal someone's cultural background, beliefs, and values, as well as their personality traits. By observing someone's attire, we can make inferences about their nature and personality. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to how we dress and the message we convey through our clothing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding both culture and character. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the cultural examples provided for India and Western countries. The argument regarding character traits is also logically extended, linking clothing choices to personality attributes like confidence and creativity. The response maintains a consistent position throughout and concludes effectively. It meets all requirements of the task, providing a balanced and well-supported discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear, demonstrating a high level of control over the structure of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the topic. The student uses a good range of topic-specific terms such as 'cultural background', 'dress code', 'nonverbal', and 'professionalism'. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a band 8 or 9. However, there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning, and the range is sufficient to express ideas with precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures and subordinate clauses ('by observing someone's clothing, we can determine...'). Grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is fluent and easy to follow, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
