Student answer (Band 6.5)
People choose to dress themselves in their own way. Some people argue that the purpose of clothing is more than covering body such as representing their personality and culture. I totally agree with the statement that clothing represents cultural background of an individual. The reason for this will be discussed below with relevant examples.
To commence with, dress code represents different culture. Each country has their own specific traditional clothes which shows their traditions and culture. For example, in Punjab girls wear salwar suit which shows that they belong to Punjabi culture. And Muslim ladies cover their head while they are staying at home or go outside which represents their respect to elders and their culture.
Moreover, clothes also portray an individual's lifestyle. There are varieties of choices for clothing which people choose according to their personality. People who are modern usually wear modern clothes such as women choose to wear skirts and hot pants. As a result, people easily get to know about the person's lifestyle around them. Furthermore, how the people style clothes also reflects an individual's character traits. The person who wear bright trendy clothes shows their creativity and their confidence the way they carry these clothes in public.
To conclude, clothing are the non-verbal form of communication which represents the cultural background of an individual and their personality. By observing someone's attire, we can make inferences about their nature and personality. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to how we dress and the message we convey through our clothing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas regarding cultural representation and personality traits are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Punjabi traditional dress and the interpretation of modern fashion choices. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the link between 'hot pants' and lifestyle is a bit simplistic, and the argument could be strengthened by exploring the nuance of how clothing can sometimes be misleading or influenced by external factors like social pressure or professional requirements. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. However, the use of these devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better integrate the two distinct arguments regarding culture and personality.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'non-verbal form of communication', 'cultural background', and 'character traits'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. There are minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'dress themselves in their own way' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'how the people style clothes' (which would be better phrased as 'how people style themselves'). More precise and varied vocabulary would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'clothing are' (should be 'clothing is') and 'Each country has their own' (should be 'its own'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and pluralization, such as 'in Punjab girls wear salwar suit' (should be 'a salwar suit'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
