Student answer (Band 6.0)

People say that a person’s clothes or their culture depicts their character to which I argue that is not true at all because you can not see their souls or you can not say how their behaviour is unless they show their true colours.

People often think that if they are wearing certain costume, they belong to a particular culture or community. For instance, if a group of people wear branded clothes, people assume that they are from rich families and are really good at nature, that they are really helpful and nice to other people which often is never true. He might wear expensive clothes, but his character is very bad, as he would treat customer service workers with disrespect, he can be very rude to the waiters in the restaurant. So only wearing good clothes would not make nice as a person.

On the other hand, if a person is not wearing good or branded clothes, they are often considered and are not treated with a certain respect they deserve. For instance, if there is beggar on the road, he is not in his best attire, and people often think that he doesn’t deserve any respect and treat him in worse ways possible, but often times it turns out that he is the one who will help people even if he won’t have anything on him.

So, to conclude, I would suggest that people should never judge anyone based on their dressing choices or culture because you can never judge someone’s true personality just by their choice of clothing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position against the idea that clothing reflects character. The ideas are relevant, such as the contrast between branded clothing and actual behavior, and the example of a beggar. However, the development is somewhat limited. The arguments rely on generalizations and could be further extended with more nuanced analysis. The conclusion is clear, but the overall development lacks the depth required for a higher band score. The response stays on topic throughout, but the reasoning remains at a fairly basic level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'On the other hand', and 'So, to conclude', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although some sentences are slightly repetitive in structure. Overall, the text is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is some repetition of basic words like 'clothes', 'people', and 'good'. Phrases such as 'really good at nature' and 'treat him in worse ways possible' are slightly unnatural or grammatically awkward. While the student attempts to convey their meaning clearly, there is a lack of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points but does not show flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'you can not see their souls or you can not say how their behaviour is', 'if there is beggar', and 'even if he won’t have anything on him'. Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are run-on or lack necessary articles. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater variety of error-free complex structures is needed.
