Student answer (Band 8.0)
Some people believe that a person’s choice of clothing can reveal a great deal about their culture and character. I largely agree with this opinion because clothes often reflect cultural traditions, personal values and lifestyle choices. However, I do not think they can provide a complete picture of someone’s personality.
Firstly, clothing is strongly connected to culture and traditions. People often choose particular styles because of their religious beliefs, ethnic background or national customs. For example, in India, people commonly wear traditional clothes such as sarees, kurtas and sherwanis during weddings and religious festivals. Such clothing can indicate a person’s cultural background and their connection with their heritage. Similarly, traditional outfits worn during festivals and ceremonies in countries such as Japan, Scotland and Saudi Arabia can provide clear clues about people’s cultural identities.
Secondly, clothing can sometimes reflect aspects of a person’s character and lifestyle. Someone who regularly wears clean, formal and well-organised clothes may appear professional, disciplined and conscious of their appearance. In contrast, a person who prefers simple and comfortable clothes may place greater importance on practicality and convenience. For instance, an employee who dresses appropriately for an important business meeting may demonstrate respect for workplace expectations and other participants. Therefore, clothing can communicate certain personal qualities without the need for verbal communication.
Nevertheless, clothing is not always an accurate reflection of character. People may select their clothes based on their occupation, financial situation, social environment or the occasion. For example, a responsible and hardworking person may wear simple casual clothes when relaxing at home, while an irresponsible person may dress elegantly for social events. Consequently, judging someone's personality solely by their appearance can result in unfair assumptions.
In conclusion, I agree that clothing can provide valuable information about a person’s culture and may offer some insight into their character. However, it should not be used as the only basis for judging someone, because appearance is influenced by many factors beyond personality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both the cultural and character-based aspects of the prompt. The counter-argument in the third paragraph is particularly effective, as it adds nuance to your position and demonstrates a sophisticated approach to the task. The conclusion effectively synthesises your main points without simply repeating them. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, introduced by effective transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion'. The use of cohesive devices is natural and unobtrusive, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is smooth. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, indicating a high level of control over the structure of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the task. You use topic-specific terms such as 'cultural identities', 'heritage', 'practicality', and 'workplace expectations' effectively. The language is precise and conveys your meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it could be elevated slightly further to reach the highest band by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions. However, the current range is more than sufficient to express your ideas with precision and flexibility, and there are no noticeable errors in word choice or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional-like structures and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Someone who regularly wears... may appear...'). The punctuation is accurate, and the sentence construction is consistently error-free. There are no significant grammatical slips, and the control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is excellent. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy, which is consistent with the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
