Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dressing sense plays an important role in everyone's life. The way people wear the clothes is allows other to judge their thoughts, idea, behavior and the traditional background. However, I do not fully agree with this view as it is not possible in every situation. I will explain it in upcoming paragraphs with suitable examples.

One of the major reasons is that people often wear clothes according to the latest trend and follow the brands which are highly reputed during the moment. This way they feel more comfortable, confident with high status and background, which allows to build the mental and overall well being.

Another possible reason is the matter of occasion, which helps to make a difference in two or more outfits, such as formal and informal. For instance, to attend a party, function or business meetings, people increasingly wear coat suits, for well dress up. This sounds totally opposite from while doing exercise or meditation in a gym.

However, there is no doubt that we can judge the personality and background of someone with the outfit and without communicating verbally. we can examine their budget and income from the value of their clothes as people spend from their savings or earning. However it is not possible in ever situation, some time people wear long sized t shirts just for status symbol or follow the fashion so we never imagine about their culture from their dressing styles.

In my view, clothes can express the mood and expressions but does not fully able to reveal internal thoughts and overall background.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether clothing reflects culture and character. You provide a clear position, stating you do not fully agree. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the paragraph regarding 'occasions' mentions formal and informal wear but does not explicitly link this to the core question of whether it reveals 'culture and character'. The argument about status symbols is relevant but could be expanded with more depth to reach a higher band. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly links back to the prompt's specific keywords—culture and character—rather than just discussing clothing in general.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'One of the major reasons', and 'For instance'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions are slightly awkward, such as 'This sounds totally opposite from while doing exercise'. The referencing is occasionally unclear; for instance, the phrase 'This way' in the second paragraph lacks a precise antecedent. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reputed', 'status symbol', and 'verbally'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'well dress up' instead of 'well-dressed' or 'dressing sense' which is less common in formal academic writing. Additionally, there are some repetitive structures. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions that are appropriate for an academic context, and try to avoid repeating the same words within the same paragraph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the traditional background'), verb forms ('is allows'), and sentence fragments or run-on sentences. For example, 'we can examine their budget... as people spend from their savings or earning' is grammatically shaky. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and capitalization errors at the start of sentences. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic punctuation and article usage.
