Student answer (Band 6.5)

I agree that a person's choice of clothes can tell us a lot about their culture and character. Clothes are an important part of daily life, and people often choose them based on their traditions, personality and lifestyle.

Firstly, clothing can show a person's culture and traditions. Different countries and communities have their own tradition clothes. For example, in India, people often wear traditional clothes such as sarees, salwar kameez and turbans during weddings and festivals. These clothes can show their culture background and traditions. Similarly, people from other cultures may wear traditional clothing on special occasions.

Secondly, clothes can give some information about a person's personality. For example, a person who prefer bright colours and fashionable clothes may be confident and interested in fashion. In contrast, someone who usually wears simple and comfortable clothes may prefer a quite and practical lifestyle. Therefore, clothing can sometimes reflect people's personal choices and interests.

However, I do not think clothes can tell us everything about someone's character. People may dress differently depending on their workplace , weather, occasion or financial situation. For example, a person may wear formal clothes at work even if they normally prefer casual clothing. Therefore, it would be unfair to judge someone's personality only by their appearance.

In conclusion, I agree that clothes can provide useful information about a person's culture and character. However, clothing is only one way to understand someone and we should not judge people completely by what they wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. However, the essay falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement (245 words), which necessitates a penalty in this criterion. While the ideas regarding culture and personality are relevant and supported by examples like Indian traditional dress and workplace attire, the development is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, the arguments could be expanded with more depth or a more nuanced exploration of the relationship between clothing and identity. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, but the overall development remains at a basic level due to the word count constraint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In contrast', and 'However' are used appropriately to link ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct arguments. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion of the argument. Overall, the structure is clear and serves the purpose of the essay well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'traditional clothes', 'formal clothes', and 'practical lifestyle'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler, repetitive phrasing. To improve, the student should incorporate more precise or academic collocations to demonstrate a wider range. For instance, instead of 'tell us a lot', one could use 'provide significant insight into'. The spelling is generally accurate, and the word choices do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'culture background' (should be 'cultural background') and 'a quite and practical' (should be 'a quiet and practical'). Despite these occasional slips, the grammar does not impede understanding. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, and ensure higher accuracy in adjective-noun collocations.
