Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent times, it has been argued that a person's culture and character can be described from their selection of clothes, while many do not seem to believe this opinion. I strongly disagree with this point and I will give relevant examples for my answer.

To begin with, individuals select their outfits according to the occasions and celebrations. A person's culture cannot be identified with their appearance. In addition, humans dress according to the events or functions they need to attend such as meetings, parties, festivals etc. For example, if a company organizes a Diwali celebration at the office campus all employee's will wear traditional outfits. As a result, it cannot be assumed that they all belong to that particular culture.

Secondly, carrying one's self in a certain manner also does not prove that their character is good or bad. In today's generation youngsters admire Gothic culture and present themselves as one of those characters but it doesn't mean they are harmful or without ethics. Moreover, their behaviour should be seen on what act of kindness and the way they interact with others, not by what kind of clothing they choose to wear. For instance, the Indian children are influenced by the western traditional costumes and if they present their individuality in a certain way it does not represent their moral will not be as Indian youth. As a result, nobody can determine what character a person hold's advocating them by their looks.

In conclusion, publics personal style cannot distinguish their tradition and values. In my view its their choice how they wish to hold their clothing preference and neither anyone can hold them accountable of behaviour from their physical looks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments are relevant, particularly the point about situational dressing and the distinction between outward appearance and internal character. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding Indian children and Western clothing is slightly confusing and could have been articulated more clearly to support the argument. While the response covers all parts of the task, the supporting examples could be more fully extended to reach a higher band. The position is clear, but the depth of analysis is somewhat restricted.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit unclear, such as the phrase 'advocating them by their looks' in the third paragraph, which disrupts the logical progression of the sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinions clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'individuality' and 'distinguish', which are used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'publics personal style' (should be 'a person's personal style') and 'moral will' (which is an awkward phrasing). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with apostrophes ('employee's' instead of 'employees', 'hold's' instead of 'holds') and subject-verb agreement. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'neither anyone can hold them accountable of behaviour from their physical looks'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable and occur with enough frequency to prevent a higher score. The control of punctuation is inconsistent.
