Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that a person's choice of clothes can tell us lot about their culture and character. I completely agree with this view because clothing can reflect person's cultural background, traditions and personality.

Firstly, clothes can provide information about person's culture. people from different cultures often have their own traditional clothing, which they wear on special occasions such as weddings, festivals and religious celebrations. For example, many Indian people wear traditional clothes such as kurta-pajamas or sarees during important cultural events. Therefore, a person's choice of clothing can clearly indicate their cultural background.

Secondly, clothing can also reflect a person's character and personality. People usually choose clothes according to their personal taste and lifestyle. For instance, someone who regularly wears fashionable and colorful clothes may be confident and interested in expressing themselves, whereas a person who prefers simple and comfortable clothes may have a more practical personality. Although clothing cannot reveal everything about someone, it can give us useful clues about their character.

Whereas, sometime it is very hard to know about the personality of person from their clothes. To exemplify, if a person from other states wear traditional clothes of Punjab than its hard for others to identify their original ethinicity. Consequently, eventhough clothes reflects people's traditions but it can also misjudged people and create a discrimination.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that a person's choice of clothes can tell us a lot about their culture and character because it can reflect both their cultural traditions and personal preferences

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is maintained throughout. The ideas are relevant, with distinct paragraphs focusing on culture and personality respectively. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the counter-argument in the third paragraph is a bit brief and could have been expanded to provide a more nuanced perspective. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and simply restates the introduction without adding a final thought. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth and that the conclusion provides a more comprehensive summary of the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different themes. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion; for example, the transition 'Whereas, sometime' is grammatically awkward and does not effectively link the previous paragraph to the counter-argument. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'it' in the final paragraph. Improving the variety and precision of linking words will help the flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cultural background', 'traditional clothing', and 'personal preferences'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'misjudged people' instead of 'misjudge people' and 'create a discrimination'. The range is sufficient but lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would significantly improve the lexical quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'tell us lot', 'about person's culture'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'clothes reflects'), and punctuation mistakes. The sentence 'if a person from other states wear traditional clothes of Punjab than its hard' contains multiple errors in tense, agreement, and spelling. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy is recommended.
