IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, people often say that it is possible to determine someone's culture and character from their choice of clothes. I disagree with the statement.
I believe that the way people dress can provide some information about their background, traditions and personality; although it is not always accurate.
For example, traditional clothing can reveal a person's cultural or religious background, but it cannot determine the true character of the person. In Nigeria, people often wear traditional outfits such as Ankara or native attire during weddings or festivals. This shows that they are proud of their cultures irrespective that they exhibit different characters or behaviors.
However, I do not think we should judge people's character and culture simply by their choice of clothes. People may decide to wear outfits based on their occupation, the weather, or the occasion. For instance, a person may dress to work as an Accountant but prefer casual wears at home. This does not reflect their personalities.
In conclusion, I believe clothes gives us clues about people's cultural or religious background but it does not determine their character. g people better can make

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 185 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain underdeveloped and the conclusion is incomplete, ending abruptly with a sentence fragment ('g people better can make'). While you clearly state your position and provide relevant examples, such as the mention of Nigerian traditional attire, the lack of depth and the failure to complete the task prevent a higher score. To improve, you must expand your supporting points and ensure the essay is fully developed to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the brevity of the response. The final sentence is incoherent due to an incomplete thought, which disrupts the flow of the conclusion. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a fully developed central idea and that all sentences are complete and grammatically sound to maintain a smooth logical flow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'traditional outfits', 'cultural background', and 'personality' used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'casual wears' (should be 'casual wear'). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the variety and precision required for higher band scores. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'clothes gives us' (subject-verb agreement error: 'clothes' is plural, so it should be 'give') and the incomplete final sentence. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the overall control of complex structures is inconsistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that all sentences are complete, avoiding fragments that detract from the professional tone of your writing.
