IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
People often form opinions about others based on the clothes they wear. While I agree that clothing can provide some information about a person's cultural background and personality, I believe that it is not always an accurate indicator of who they are.
On the one hand, clothing can reflect both culture and character. Traditional garments are often closely linked to a particular society and can reveal a person's heritage. For example, many Indians wear saris during festivals, while Japanese people may wear kimonos on special occasions. Such clothing helps preserve cultural identity and allows individuals to express pride in their traditions. In addition, personal fashion choices may reveal certain personality traits. People who wear bright colours and fashionable outfits are often perceived as confident and sociable, whereas those who prefer simple and formal clothing may appear serious and professional.
However, it is not always possible to judge people accurately by their appearance. In today's globalised world, fashion trends are shared across countries, and people frequently wear similar styles regardless of their cultural backgrounds. For instance, business professionals throughout the world commonly wear suits, making it difficult to identify their nationality or culture. Moreover, clothes may not reflect a person's true character because many individuals dress according to workplace requirements, social expectations, or practical needs. Someone who appears reserved because of their formal attire may, in reality, be outgoing and friendly.
I believe that although clothing can offer some clues about a person's identity, it should not be used as the sole basis for judging them. Character is shaped by values, experiences, and behaviour, which cannot always be seen from outward appearance. Therefore, genuine communication and interaction are necessary to understand a person fully.
In conclusion, clothes can reveal certain aspects of a person's culture and personality, but they do not always provide a complete or accurate picture. For this reason, people should avoid making quick judgments based solely on appearance.
