IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that it is easy to know about next person's culture through their piece of attire. I partially agree with the given statement, as a number people display their culture by wearing their heritage clothes, however it would be not possible in every situation, because people nowadays adapting western culture.

On the one hand, majority of Indian humankind showcase their tradition by their choice of garments. For instance, most of Indian women wear saree on a daily basis, because it is not only comfortable type of clothing for them but also keep them connected with their cultural roots. Whereas, Indian men are most probably witness in kurta and pajama. I think this is the best way to carry their tradition, customs and social etiquette. As a result, they can share their culture to the next generations. Apart from that, a number of Indian citizens wear traditional attire during family functions, events and other cultural parties, which promote the sense of unity and belonging.

On the other hand, in today's time, people love to wear fancy and stylish garments instead of traditional one, because they want to become a trendy and want to enhance their appearance. Also, youngsters are keen to carry jeans and t-shirts during their work time, for their comfort for a long working hours and it is easy to buy at any place. Whereas, various office workers have a specific dress, so they cannot wear traditional attire. Therefore, it would be challenging for us to recognise next person's character and culture via their choice of clothes.

In conclusion, a majority of Indian people wear traditional attire on a daily basis or during functions, which clearly display their culture. However, citizens are now adapting western culture, so it would be difficult to give particular statement regarding their culture through their outfit choice.
