Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, knowing what people likes or dislikes have become a debatable issue. It is believed by some individuals that what someone likes to wear can easily help to know about what is the character and culture of the person. I disagree with the statement as there are some differences between the preference of clothes and culture.

One of the main reason is the globalisation. In other words, nowadays clothes from different regions are easily accessible. Thus someone living in one country can easily get the clothes from other nations and wear it. Therefore no one can distinguish what culture this person is from. For example, western clothes are easily available every country. If someone wear those no one can tell if they are natives or not.

Moreover, sometimes a person might follow modern ideas or act in a certain way that is different from the people of his own community but wears traditional clothes. Hence, it become difficult to know about character or culture. To add on, what someone wears depends completely on the circumstances not on character or culture. For instance, models might wear short clothes when on runway or at some shot but, when there is any religious or cultural activity then they prefer wearing traditional clothes which may make it hard to decide what they actual feel is good or bad in society. As a result, considering only one aspect is not good.

To conclude, what someone wears can be based on different factors. It is difficult to decide the aspect like culture or character based on that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position ('I disagree with the statement') and supporting it with reasons such as globalisation and changing circumstances like the clothing choices of models. All parts of the task are addressed, and the position remains consistent throughout. However, the ideas are somewhat generalized and could be extended further with deeper explanation or more robust examples. For instance, the argument regarding globalisation is introduced well, but the supporting example about western clothes is brief and underdeveloped. Despite this, the main arguments are relevant to the question and fulfill the requirements for Band 6.0, as it addresses the task adequately and presents a clear viewpoint with supporting arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct point (globalisation and changing circumstances/contexts). Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'One of the main reason', 'Thus', 'For example', and 'Moreover'. However, some cohesive devices and referencing are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as 'One of the main reason is' (agreement error) and 'what they actual feel'. Paragraph transitions are present, but the progression of ideas within paragraphs can feel slightly abrupt. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'globalisation', 'accessible', 'distinguish', and 'circumstances'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and word choice errors, such as 'knowing what people likes or dislikes' (incorrect plural agreement and noun form), 'preference of clothes' instead of 'clothing preferences', and 'short clothes' instead of 'revealing clothes' or 'casual attire'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the minor slips in word formation and collocation prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. The lexical resource demonstrated is characteristic of Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'If someone wear those no one can tell if they are natives or not.' There are, however, several noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the essay. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('One of the main reason is', 'someone likes', 'someone wear'), pluralization errors ('wear clothes from other nations and wear it'), and missing articles ('every country', 'on runway'). While these errors do not impede overall communication and the meaning remains clear, they occur with enough frequency to restrict the score to Band 5.5, reflecting a limitation in grammatical accuracy when attempting more complex structures.
