IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Clothing has been a part of our lives since ancient times, and it has slowly transformed into an unspoken rule of identity and a form of fashion. Recognizing someone from their clothing was very common back then; if we just look at their traditional attire, most of the time it becomes easier to guess where they are from.

In recent times, fashion has become a trend, and people follow what their favourite sports person or celebrity is wearing, and it's a global phenomenon. Nowadays, that is also one of the main reasons why it has become difficult to identify someone from their attire. Because you can easily find, buy and try whatever clothes you like in almost any country and on any continent, and in my opinion that makes people look similar, and people and communities lose their distinctness. I mean, the differences their traditions created, fashion just erased them.

On the other hand, even if they wear anything that makes it harder to guess where they are from, once you start noticing how they handle their fashion, which gives them a unique character, you start understanding more about who they are. For example, a person from East Asia is trying to adapt American fashion. We can still easily identify their culture by their appearance.

In conclusion, choosing what to wear is a choice of an individual. Guessing someone's culture by their clothes is still acceptable, but I am strictly againt to say anything about their character just because they choose to wear something they like.

Paragraph organization could be strengthened to ensure smoother transitions between the contrasting viewpoints on culture and character.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'unspoken rule of identity', 'global phenomenon', and 'distinctness'. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'againt to say' instead of 'against saying'. Some phrases are overly conversational or repetitive, like 'try whatever clothes you like' and 'how they handle their fashion'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general message clearly and without impeding communication, the imprecise phrasing and occasional errors place it firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. For instance, conditional and relative clauses are attempted, as in 'if we just look at their traditional attire, most of the time it becomes easier to guess where they are from.'
