Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many individuals believe that the choice of apparel speaks a lot about a person's society and character. This essay disagress with the statement, as this can have a negative impact on people not being judged correctly, and are also subjected to racisim affecting them mentally.

To begin with, judging a person by the outer appearence is like judging a book by it's cover. This is to say, individuals are misjudged by the way they dress. I believe character speaks louder than clothes do. For instance, girls wearing short dresses face a lot of criticism by the society and are often given the label of being characterless. Furthermore, many people do not keep up with the current trend of fashion as it may not be their area of interest, which is why they dress up in a certain way. But that does not say, that they do not belong to a good family or a person with a certain character .

However, in many cases following cultural traditions it often leads to encountering racial comments. Individuals staying in a foreign country, often wear apparels representing their culture or traditions, these people are usually seen differently as they dont blend in that society resulting in them facing unwanted remarks leaving them mentally depressed. To give an example, people belonging to the Sikh religion face a lot of racisim around the world, because of their turban and different ethinic look, which has resulted in many converting themselves and giving up their traditions for mental peace.

In conclusion, nobody should be judged by the type of clothes they wear, and also should not be a subject of racisim only because they follow a certain tradition.
