IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Traditional values and beliefs are different from society to society. Some people say that we can recognise the culture and character by individuals outfit. From my perspective, people often follow their traditional values and beliefs. We can identify their roots by clothing style at some extent. Since we are living in modern society, it may not be always true. Nowadays, people share their culture and values with different communities which makes it difficult to figure out where individuals are belongs to.

To begin, there are many reasons why some people say that it is easy to identify individuals belongingness by their outfits. In our society, individuals often likes to stay close to their culture. Some custumes represent their identity itself. For instance, saree wore by ladies often represent Indian community while full body garments in black color of burqa often represent arab nations. It shows their closeness with culture.

On the other hand, modern world has changed the way individuals used to live. Everyone is now looking for a better comfort, convenience and safety. A large propotional of mens and womens have started to wear jeans and t-shirt which they have been inspired from movies and famous personalities. To add more, many groups are exchanging their culture with new friends at college and workplace. Therefore, it would not possible to recognize them by their outfits.

To sum up, identifying people from their clothing is not possible due to modern choice as everyone can be seen in similar outfits now. Although, people enjoy wearing traditional costume during the festival season, that is the only time when ethnicity can be identified. However, people used to avoid wearing them in ordinary days due to comfort and convenience.

Despite these flaws, the logical organisation provides a coherent structure that is easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'traditional values', 'globalisation' (implied), 'ethnicity', and 'convenience'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'individuals outfit' instead of 'individuals' outfits', 'at some extent' instead of 'to some extent', and 'saree wore' instead of 'sarees worn'.
