Student answer (Band 6.0)
In contemporary society, a significant number of individuals believe that they can recognize a person by their appreance. However, some disagree with this statement; nonetheless, choice of clothes are not always related to a person's culture or believe. Before giving my opinion to what extent I agree or diagree to this, this essay will analyze both the perspective.
A considerable number of people belonging to a particular believe or religion tend to follow a dress code which eventually become part of their culture and character. A group of people believe that it is easy to judge the culture and character of a person by what he wears, how he talks and how he behaves. For instance, in Pakistan, if a person is wearing a shalwar kameez and a cap (topi) on his head he can easily be characterised as a cleric. However, if a person is wearing jeans or shorts everyone believes he belongs to a modern family, astray and not following the religion properly. The same applies to the women. Any women wearing a hijab or covering her face is considered more pious then rest of the women.
On the other hand, another group do not agree to this statement. In their opinon, it is not always necessary that choice of clothes always show a person's culture or character. Many people with indecent clothing are entirely opposite to their culture or believe. To illustrate, females of many muslim families who are living abroad choose to wear modern clothing like tight fitted clothes. Here their choice of clothing is not showing their culture because as a muslim we are advised to wear modest clothing. However, it shows that they are just following the trends.
From my perspective, choice of clothes have a crucial role in person's upbringing. However, it is undeniable that one cannot always judge an individual by what he is wearning. Furthermore, it is unadviseable to give a charater certificate to anyone on the basis of what they prefer to wear and how they want to move in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both sides of whether clothing reveals a person's culture and character, while also presenting a clear personal position in the conclusion. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as the cultural dress codes in Pakistan and the lifestyle choices of Muslim families abroad. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation regarding religious attire is detailed, whereas the counter-argument concerning modern clothing lacks deeper extension and specific elaboration. To reach a higher level, the ideas would need to be more fully and consistently developed throughout the body paragraphs, supported by more detailed real-world examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the discussion into distinct paragraphs, featuring an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'To illustrate', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly repetitive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the differing viewpoints. To achieve a higher standard, the progression of ideas needs to be smoother, and cohesive relationships between sentences should be managed with greater flexibility and subtlety rather than relying on standard formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'contemporary society', 'characterised', and 'upbringing'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word forms. For example, 'appreance' contains a spelling error, 'believe' is used in place of the noun 'belief' ('culture or believe'), and phrases like 'give a charater certificate' are slightly informal or awkward in academic writing. These errors do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher mark due to a lack of precise control and stylistic awareness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'if a person is wearing a shalwar kameez... he can easily be characterised as a cleric'. There are, however, several grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage, including 'choice of clothes are not always related' (should be 'is'), 'giving my opinion to what extent' (should be 'on'), 'any women' (should be 'any woman'), and 'what he is wearning' (spelling slip and tense awkwardness). While these errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable, they rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear.
