Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think that a person's character and culture might be judged by their clothes. I disagree with this view because I believe attires can only show the outer appearence of individuals. On the other side, their values and behaviour say a lot about a person's traditions and character.

To begin with, choice of clothes might be depend upon financial situation of individuals. This is because wealthy people are more likely to buy expensive branded garments which looks attractive and sleek. Conversely, the middle class people may not afford branded clothes. So, they purchase cheapest clothes just to cover their bodies. In my own experience, I don't like to buy expensive clothes becasue I believe this is just wastage of money. Hence, clothes are one of the materialistic things which cannot define the human character.

Eventually, a person's good values and behaviour are the main things which shows their inner beauty and roots. This is because humans are defined by their emotions and cultural values. People with positive values and morals often helped others in difficult situations which shows their good character.

In addition, the culture of the individuals might be shown in their constant behavior, such as, greeting everyone with love and respect, showing positive attitude to others and take part in cultural ceremonies. Therefore, instead of clothes, the attitude and behaviour can show more about a person.

In conclusion, although the clothes can only define the outer part of individuals. However, person's traditions and character may defined by their deeds and morals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you disagree that clothing reveals a person’s character or culture, and the conclusion returns to this view. You give relevant reasons, especially that clothing can reflect financial circumstances and that behaviour and values are better evidence of character. The personal example about avoiding expensive clothes also supports your argument. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for instance, the link between helping others and cultural roots could be made clearer, and the examples of greetings and ceremonies are listed without showing how they demonstrate culture more reliably than clothing. This covers the task well overall, but fuller development and more precise support would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from financial influences on clothing to behaviour and cultural practices, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “In addition” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise. “On the other side” does not clearly introduce the contrast intended, while “Eventually” is an awkward transition to the next main point. The conclusion’s “although … However” construction also makes the relationship between its clauses unclear. Referencing is mostly understandable, but repeated references to “a person” and “individuals” can feel general. More natural transitions and clearer links between examples and claims would improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial situation,” “branded garments,” “materialistic,” “cultural ceremonies” and “positive values and morals.” These choices allow you to discuss clothing, character and culture, and most meaning remains clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “outer appearence” is misspelled, “cheapest clothes” sounds overly blunt, and “roots” is vague in the context of traditions. “Attires” is also less natural here than “clothing” or “outfits.” Aim for more accurate collocations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “good values” and “positive attitude”; more specific wording would make the argument more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including explanations with “This is because” and a contrast introduced by “although.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “choice of clothes might be depend” needs a correct verb form, and “garments which looks” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “the main things which shows,” the verb should agree with the plural subject; “may defined” also needs a passive verb form. The final sentence combines “although” and “However” in a way that leaves the clause structure incomplete. Review agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex structures with accurate clause construction.
