Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a world where we consider fashion as a way of expressing ourselves, I agree that one can tell about a person's culture and character from their fashion choice.

In recent times, the younger generations are very intentional about what they put on. It has become a trend of expressing themselves. For example, someone who is introverted is known to wear an oversized hoodie with baggy jeans. It is a way of expressing a person who likes to be in his shell. The same goes for someone who is cool and laid back. For someone who is extroverted, this person loves to be the centre of attention and it would reflect in his dressing like putting on a lot of jewellery, beads and for the ladies makeups. A person that loves to wear suits can be pointed to be a person with high intellect or working in a standard or professional jobs like doctors, lawyers, bankers and so on and vice versa.

I also believe dressing can point out a person's culture. Most people love to represent their culture especially in countries that have multi-ethnicity. A scenario would be when going out for events like weddings, a friend's birthday or even attending a Sunday's service. For instance in Nigeria, a Hausa man might out on a Kaftan or Agbada and the women might put on a gele as head tie.

In addition, it does not only reflect in countries that have diverse ethnicity like African countries but also western countries like Brazil, Belarus, Mexico have their traditional attire which they are identified for.

In conclusion, a person's choice of clothes can reflect the charcter of the person because fashion is a way of expression and self identity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that clothing can reveal both character and culture, and the conclusion returns to this view. The examples of an introverted person wearing loose clothing and Hausa traditional dress make the response relevant, and you address both parts of the question. However, the character examples rely on broad assumptions—for instance, that suits indicate high intellect—and the point about professional clothing is not fully explained. The cultural discussion is also less developed than the character discussion: the references to Brazil, Belarus and Mexico are not supported with specific examples. This gives the response a clear, relevant answer, but some ideas need more careful qualification and development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate discussion of character and culture, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the two main reasons, while signposts such as “For example,” “In addition” and “In conclusion” make the progression visible. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. “The same goes for someone who is cool and laid back” does not clearly explain how this relates to the preceding example, and “and vice versa” is left without a clear reference. The cultural paragraph also moves from Nigerian clothing to several countries without explaining the link in detail. More explicit transitions and clearer referencing would make the organisation feel less dependent on formulaic signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “expressing themselves,” “introverted,” “extroverted,” “multi-ethnicity,” “traditional attire” and “self identity.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the cultural examples add useful specificity. There are also several imprecise or unnatural expressions, such as “tell about a person’s culture,” “put on a lot of jewellery,” and “pointed to be a person with high intellect.” “A Sunday’s service” and “makeups” are also awkward in context, while “charcter” is a spelling error. These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more accurate collocations and use specific terms for clothing and cultural practices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “For example” and “especially in countries that have multi-ethnicity.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For instance, “someone who is introverted is known to wear” has an awkward passive construction, and “a person that loves to wear suits can be pointed to be” contains faulty clause structure. There are also agreement and article problems in “professional jobs like doctors” and “for the ladies makeups,” as well as punctuation issues in the long sentence listing clothing and occupations. Work on constructing complete, balanced sentences and checking articles, agreement and punctuation; greater accuracy would make your ideas easier to follow.
