Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's modern world, many people often wear different types of clothes influenced by different cultures. However, many individual believe that a person's cloth can take us a lot about their culture and character. In my view, I totally disagree with this view because clothing choices are often depends on person's personality and their interests.

To begin with, traditional and cultural clothes reveal a lot about country's economy and people's lifestyle. For example, in India, many women wear sarees, while many men wear dhotis and kurtas during special occasions, such as weddings, birthday celebrations and festivals. As a result, we can not predict thier culture and character based on their dressing, as their appearance may not accurately reflect their cultural background. Therefore, people should not judge others just based on their choice of clothes.

Apart from that, clothes does not always reflect a personality. True character depends on person's behaviour, kindness, honesty and confidencee. For instance, most people in france wear modern clothes instead of traditional attire; because of this, people can not precisely judge them based only on what they wear.

On the other hand, person's clothes can reveal a lot information about their traditional backgrounds, lifestyles and their upbringings. To illutrate this, in Japan people wear traditional kimonos during important milestones, such as weddings, retirement parties and Coming-out-of-age ceremonies, which shows their deep respect for cultural roots and customs.

To sum up, although people's choices of clothes can reveal a lot about their upbringing and cultural background, I still disagree with this view because people's personality depend on their discipline, confidence and behaviour. Therefore, Individual's dressing style can not entirely about them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you disagree that clothing reliably reveals a person’s culture and character, and you return to this view in the introduction and conclusion. You also address both culture and character, using examples from India, France and Japan. However, some reasoning is unclear or does not fully support the claim. The India example describes traditional clothing at special occasions, which actually shows how dress can signal cultural background; the explanation that this means we cannot predict culture is not convincing. The Japan example similarly supports the opposing view, and the conclusion partly concedes that clothing reveals background. Develop the distinction between a possible clue and a reliable basis for judging an individual, and explain each example in relation to that distinction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Apart from that” and “To sum up” make the structure easy to follow. However, progression between claims is not always logical. The paragraph beginning “On the other hand” introduces evidence that supports the view you oppose, but its relationship to your argument is not explained; the conclusion then acknowledges that clothes can reveal cultural background. This makes the overall line of reasoning feel inconsistent. Some linking phrases are also mechanical, and references such as “this view” and “because of this” do not always make the intended connection clear. Organise the body around distinct reasons for your disagreement, and explicitly explain how each example supports them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “traditional attire,” “cultural background,” “upbringing” and “customs,” which helps address the subject. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “important milestones.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling sometimes reduce precision: “a person’s cloth” is not the natural expression for clothing, “reveal a lot information” is missing a word, and “illutrate” and “confidencee” are misspelled. “Traditional backgrounds” is also unclear in context. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “clothing choices,” “provide information about” and “cultural heritage.” Proofreading spelling and checking whether each phrase expresses your intended meaning would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while” and “although,” and your meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “many individual believe” should use a plural noun and verb, while “clothes does not” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “clothing choices are often depends,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use either “often depend” or “are often dependent.” Missing articles also occur in phrases such as “on person’s personality.” There are punctuation issues around the semicolon in the France example and inconsistent capitalisation in “Individual’s.” Review agreement and article use, then proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
