Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that there is a chance that we get to know a person's culture and character only from their choice of clothes. I mostly disagree even if sometimes this can be true.

Although there is some type of clothes originaly from a specific country or area, but we can't assume that anyone who wear this clothes is part of this culture or have similar attributes; This is mainly because of the globalization we live in now, and the way people connect and change thoughts. For example, someone sees an actor wearing a hat in a scene of a film, he may get influenced by either the actor or the clothes and imitate that. And if we judge only from clothes we will be making false assumptions.

In addition, if we manage somehow to know someone's culture from his clothes, which could be easy, specially for religious clothes or special traditional wearings. There is a big chance to miss getting right the real character of the person. Obviously, not anyone belong to a particular tradition or any form of identity means they have similar attributes. A good illustration of this is the family, a couple coming from the same region, living in the same tradition, their kids are grown learning from their parents too, but all of them have different characters. Which is natural to have because the human brain is special, and it's influenced by small variables. Plus each day is different than the other, so we won't expect similar characters just because they share same culture or type of clothes.

To sum up, even if there is a possibility to get to know the person's culture and character from his style of clothes, we should't make this quick assumption, because it may have bad consequences or may be seen in a manner that can hurt this human being's feelings.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you mostly disagree that clothing reveals both culture and character. You address both parts of the question, explaining that global influences can lead people to adopt clothing from elsewhere and that people sharing a culture can still have different personalities. The film-actor example and the family illustration support these points. This meets the task well, but the development is uneven: the first example is hypothetical and brief, while the family example is more fully explained. The claim that culture can be easy to identify through religious or traditional clothing could also be qualified with a specific example. To strengthen the response further, develop each reason with more precise evidence and explain its connection to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion restates your caution against judging people by appearance. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “Although,” “In addition,” and “To sum up” help guide the reader. However, some connections are awkward or unclear. The second body paragraph begins with “if we manage somehow to know someone's culture,” which does not connect smoothly to the preceding point, and the long family example contains several ideas in one sentence. The contrast in the first paragraph is also weakened by using “Although” and “but” together. Use clearer topic sentences and divide extended explanations into shorter, logically linked sentences to make cohesion more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss identity and appearance, including “globalization,” “imitate,” “traditional,” “attributes,” and “false assumptions.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms show an effort to be precise. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or unnatural, as in “originaly from a specific country,” “special traditional wearings,” and “getting right the real character.” There are also spelling errors, including “originaly” and “should't.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit the precision and control expected for a stronger performance. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling; for example, use “traditional garments” and “judge someone’s character accurately.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional and relative clauses, as in “if we judge only from clothes” and “a couple coming from the same region.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “anyone who wear” instead of “anyone who wears,” “not anyone belong” instead of “not everyone belongs,” and “their kids are grown learning,” which needs a clearer verb construction. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: the semicolon before “This is mainly because” is awkward, and the family example becomes a long, loosely joined sentence. Practise subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences with clear clause boundaries. More consistent accuracy would make your varied structures easier to follow.
