Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people argue that you can tell a lot about a person's culture and character from the way they dress. I disagree with this statement. I think a person should not be judged by their choice of clothes.

what a person chooses to wear is a very personal matter and it should not necessarily dictate an individual's character. A very dear friend of mine who is a Christian, came to Pakistan to meet me. On her trip here she really liked abayas, a traditional long dress that Muslims women wear to cover themselves from head to toe. She found it to be extremely comfortable especially in hot weather. She is now seen in abayas all the time. The reason for her to choose this particular piece of clothing was not religion or culture, but it was mere comfort.

On the contrary, I don't find abayas to be comfortable. I don't wear them at all. Even though it represents modesty in our culture and religion. I try to wear modest clothing but I always opt for relaxed shirt and trousers. Based on my choice of clothes, if someone thinks that I am not a Pakistani or a Muslim, I feel that is an unfair judgement to make.

There are many people who do choose to wear clothes based on their culture but again, it is their personal choice and we should not assume their identity and character based on that. All of my friends including myself wear hijab, but everyone have their own reasons apart from it being a culture here in Pakistan. So if someone chooses not to cover their head should we just assume that they don't have a good character? That is wrong on so many levels.

In conclusion, I believe what anyone wears is their private matter and you can only get to know someone's culture and character by getting to know them on a deeper level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and remains consistent: you disagree that clothing reliably reveals culture or character. You address both aspects of the question and support your view with relevant examples, especially your Christian friend’s choice to wear an abaya for comfort and your own preference for modest but different clothing. The point about hijab and assumptions about character further develops your argument. This is a well-supported response, although some claims are broad—for example, that clothing is a “private matter”—and the reasons behind people’s clothing choices could be explored more precisely. To strengthen the response further, explain more explicitly why clothing can give an incomplete or misleading impression rather than relying mainly on personal examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, three body paragraphs and a conclusion, with a logical progression from your friend’s example to your own experience and then to a broader point about assumptions. Linking expressions such as “On the contrary,” “Even though,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. The examples are generally easy to follow, and the final paragraph returns to your central position. Some connections could be smoother: “On the contrary” suggests a stronger opposition than the contrast between your friend’s comfort and your own preference requires, and the sentence beginning “Even though” is not fully integrated with the preceding point. More precise transitions and clearer links between examples and the main argument would make the progression more consistently fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary to discuss clothing, identity and judgement, including “traditional,” “modesty,” “identity,” and “character.” Phrases such as “unfair judgement” and “on a deeper level” communicate your ideas clearly, and the examples give the vocabulary a natural context. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated references to “choice of clothes” and “character.” A few collocations could also be more natural: “the reason for her to choose” is less idiomatic than “her reason for choosing,” while “relaxed shirt and trousers” is unclear in this context. Greater variety in describing clothing choices and more precise phrasing would add flexibility and polish.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses (“a traditional long dress that Muslims women wear”) and conditional questions (“if someone chooses not to cover their head should we just assume…”). Many sentences are clear, and the reader can follow your argument without difficulty. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “Muslims women” should be “Muslim women,” “everyone have” should be “everyone has,” and “Even though it represents modesty…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence. The opening “what” also needs a capital letter. Review subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, and punctuate embedded questions more carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
