Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the modern era, people's clothing choices have become an important part of their daily lives. Some people believe that a person's culture and personality are related to the preference of clothing by individuals. I partially agree with this statement because outfits can reflect traditions, but it cannot tell about someone's character.

To begin with, clothing can provide information about person's culture and social background. In other words, people from different countries wear own their traditional attire on special ocassions. For example, Indian women wear sarees or traditional dress on various celebrations, including weddings, anniversaries and baby showers. In contrast, western people prefer formal suit in their social functions. This clothing habit can help others identify certain culture and customs. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that clothing choices represent their traditions.

On the other hand, I believe that clothing is not a reliable way to judge someone's character because people choose their outfits based on comfort, financial situation, personal and professional requirements. To illustrate, if a wealthy person have expensive branded clothes which it not mean to have kind- hearted person. Some people opt for a simple and budget-frindly outfit who might have helpful and generous personality. As a result, judging someone only based on their appearance can lead to wrong assumptions.

In conclusion, although I agree that the choice of clothing can represent a person's traditions and rituals, it is not informed about their character. A person's behaviour, attitude and actions are much better indicators of their personality.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: clothing can reflect traditions, but it cannot reliably reveal character. You address both aspects of the question and support them with relevant examples, including Indian attire at celebrations and the contrast between expensive clothing and a person’s kindness. The conclusion also restates your view consistently. This meets the task well, although some support is generalised: the contrast between “Indian women” and “western people” could be qualified, and the character argument would be stronger with a more specific example showing how behaviour provides better evidence than appearance. Develop these points further to make the reasoning more precise and fully convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow: you first explain how clothes may signal cultural traditions, then argue that they are not a dependable guide to character. Linking phrases such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help make this organisation explicit. To improve the flow further, use referencing more precisely and avoid relying mainly on formulaic transitions. For example, “This clothing habit” is understandable but could refer more specifically to wearing traditional attire at celebrations. A smoother link between the examples and the claims they support would also make cohesion feel less signposted.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss clothing, culture and personality, including “traditional attire,” “social background,” “financial situation” and “wrong assumptions.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and the contrast between “expensive branded clothes” and a “simple” outfit helps illustrate your point. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “preference of clothing,” “wear own their traditional attire” and “it is not informed about their character.” There are also spelling errors, including “ocassions” and “budget-frindly.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully when proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a conditional example beginning “if a wealthy person…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “a wealthy person have” needs subject–verb agreement, while “which it not mean” has an incorrect clause structure. In “people from different countries wear own their traditional attire,” the possessive construction is faulty; “their own traditional attire” would be grammatical. Articles and sentence patterns also need attention, as in “information about person’s culture.” Practise checking agreement, possessives and clause structure, while retaining the variety of sentence forms you already attempt.
