IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Fashion has become a trend in this modern era. However, some individuals think that a person's traditions and character can be recognised by their attire preferences. I partially agree with the statement and will discuss the reasons behind this in the following paragraphs.
On the one hand, clothing can reflect people's unique identities. Every culture has its own languages, foods, and clothing designs, which make it distinct from others. For example, Punjabi people wear kurta pyjama on festivals and events that represent their culture. As a result, people can easily recognise them and learn their traditions.
On the other hand, clothes can not show people's character or behaviour. Due to globalisation and the international market, people can buy clothes from different communities. Additionally, wearing international clothing has become a trend, as many respect others' traditions and prefer to wear each other's clothes. Consequently, it improves diversity in society but does not show people's behaviour or manners.
In conclusion, clothes may show a person's culture because of different styles

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is stated clearly as partial agreement, and you address both culture and character. The example of Punjabi people wearing kurta pyjama at festivals supports the cultural point, while the discussion of globalisation explains why clothing may not reliably reveal behaviour. However, these ideas are brief and unevenly developed: the character argument is asserted rather than illustrated with a specific example, and the conclusion ends before fully restating your view. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, so it has limited space to explain and support its claims. Develop each main point with a fuller explanation and a relevant example, then finish with a complete conclusion that directly answers the question.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “As a result,” and “Consequently” help show relationships between ideas. This makes the argument easy to follow. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical, and the final sentence is incomplete, leaving the conclusion without a clear closing point. Some connections could also be made more explicit—for instance, explain how wearing clothing from another culture prevents observers from accurately judging someone’s character. Use transitions selectively and ensure the final paragraph completes the line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “traditions,” “attire preferences,” “globalisation,” “diversity,” and “behaviour.” These choices allow you to discuss both cultural identity and personal character, and the meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “recognised by their attire preferences.” Some expressions are less natural or precise: “Fashion has become a trend” is vague, and “each other’s clothes” does not clearly describe clothing styles from different cultures. “Languages, foods, and clothing designs” is relevant but broad. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating general terms such as “clothes”; this will make the argument sound more fluent and specific.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “clothing designs, which make it distinct from others” and the subordinate clause beginning “as many respect others’ traditions.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and punctuation generally supports the structure. Some errors remain. In “clothing designs, which make it distinct,” the pronoun reference is unclear and the verb does not agree naturally with the plural noun; revise the clause to make its subject explicit. The conclusion, “clothes may show a person’s culture because of different styles,” is also unfinished as a complete response. You already show some control of complex structures; check agreement and ensure every sentence is complete.
