Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the equipment which is broken yesterday. My name is Parth Patel and I am working as administrative assistant at the blue cross logistics. My company has contracted with you regarding the repairing of the equipment.

The computer I used is too old and have an issue regarding the internet connection. Last night, I just turned on the device and browse the article on the google but suddenly wi-fi got disconnected. After that I restarted the router of the wi-fi several time, it works with my phone but not with the computer. So I need to contact you on immediate basis because tomorrow I will have important client meeting to explain the product and policy in briefly.

Moreover, I already talked with my senior manager to give me a new computer but it will take around week to request from the authority. So until that I need to look alternative options to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your help.

Yours Sincerely,

Parth Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, the impact on work is explained, and a request for action is made. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of the impact on work is slightly vague, and the request for action could be more specific regarding the desired outcome (e.g., a technician visit or a replacement). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly less standard than 'Dear Sir or Madam' as requested. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the ideas could be expanded with more detail to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. There is a clear progression from the introduction to the problem, the impact, and the proposed solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'After that' and 'Moreover' are used, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit abrupt, and the referencing (e.g., 'the equipment') is clear, but the overall structure would benefit from a wider variety of linking words to improve the logical flow between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use basic terms like 'broken', 'old', and 'issue' repeatedly. While the meaning is clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. There are also some minor collocation errors, such as 'contact you on immediate basis' (should be 'on an immediate basis') and 'explain the product and policy in briefly' (should be 'briefly'). To improve, try to incorporate more specific professional vocabulary related to technical support and business communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'equipment which is broken yesterday' (should be 'was broken'), 'computer I used is too old and have' (should be 'has'), and 'browse the article' (should be 'browsed articles'). Additionally, 'it will take around week' is missing an article. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage will help improve your score.
