Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to explain the problem related to the Acer laptop which I bought three months ago from your store, namely Best Buy.

It has started to show a problem of freezing while searching for data, and sometimes it shows a black screen when I use it to prepare assignments for a long time. Therefore, it has become the biggest obstacle for my regular work.

I am a student, and I have to attend online classes for 3 hours as well as prepare assignments and presentations as part of the curriculum. This issue wastes my time and prevents me from concentrating on my studies. Therefore, it not only boosts my stress but also lowers my productivity.

I have tried the troubleshooting process to tackle this issue, but it persists. I would really appreciate it if this could be replaced or repaired by a technician.

I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Randeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your studies, and stated your desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, providing sufficient detail to convey the situation clearly to the recipient. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details, such as the exact model number or a reference number, to make the request feel even more authentic and professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to its impact, and finally to the proposed solution. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'as well as', and 'not only... but also' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the letter. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'regular work', 'troubleshooting process', and 'curriculum' are used correctly. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'boosts my stress' (which is slightly unnatural; 'increases my stress' or 'causes me stress' would be better) and 'show a problem of freezing' (which could be more concisely phrased as 'experiencing freezing issues'). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly, but incorporating more precise, topic-specific collocations would elevate the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the use of the 'not only... but also' structure adds complexity to your writing. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. The punctuation is handled well, and the sentence construction is clear. To improve further, ensure that you maintain consistent verb tenses and continue to experiment with more varied complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control over your grammatical range.
