Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to let you know about the issue that I am undergoing through due to the laptop that I recently received from you shop. Nowadays, I am doing work from home and it is very essential for me to have an equipment like laptop to be working properly so that I can perform my work effectively.
Regarding the laptop, the major issue that is occuring is that the desktop screen is hanging sometimes and turns black.
These problems in the laptop are making it difficult for me to work smoothly as I am not able to attend my online meetings with my boss and coworkers. Also, I am not able to complete my tasks on time which leads to mental stress and dissatisfaction.
Being your regular customer, I would like you to meticulously work on this matter and replace this old laptop with a new one so that I can have a gratifying experience.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Simran Ladhar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issue (screen hanging and turning black), explain the impact on your professional duties (inability to attend meetings and meet deadlines), and state your desired outcome (a replacement laptop). The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details, such as the date of purchase or the order number, to make the request more realistic and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Regarding the laptop', 'Also', and 'Being your regular customer' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the problem description and the impact could be more tightly integrated. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'meticulously', 'dissatisfaction', and 'gratifying'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'undergoing through' (which is redundant) and 'you shop' (a grammatical error). The phrase 'hanging sometimes' is a bit informal for a formal letter. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations will improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'due to the laptop that I recently received from you shop' (should be 'your shop') and 'it is very essential for me to have an equipment' (equipment is uncountable, so 'a piece of equipment' is needed). Additionally, 'the major issue that is occuring' contains a spelling error. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
