Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request a replacement of a HDMI cable I bought from your store. The cable is currently under warranty and the invoice number is IN[redacted phone] for the transaction.
The reason of this particular purchase was to extend my primary screen to an external device as I work from home. Since past one week, the cable is causing troubles with its functioning as it stops operating 4-5 times a day without any physical movement or internal order.
In a result, it creates confusion of whether I was able to finish the part of the job or not. In addition to that, I had to troubleshoot physically in middle of an important presentation; which made me feel unorganized and made an direct impact on my performance. This minor disruption is affecting my confidence too.
That is why, I request you to deliver me the new replacement cable at your earliest convenience. At this point, I would like to pick it up in person if the product is available at your location. I will return the damaged cable either in person or with the delivery guy.
Please let me know what works best for you. I am looking for your urgent prompt in this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Jay Suthar

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical issue with the HDMI cable, explained the negative impact on your professional work and presentations, and provided a clear request for a replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. You maintained a consistent, professional position throughout the letter, ensuring the reader understands exactly what is wrong and what action is required to resolve the situation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem description to the impact and finally to the proposed solution. You used cohesive devices such as 'In a result,' 'In addition to that,' and 'That is why' to link your sentences. While some of these transitions are slightly mechanical or non-standard (e.g., 'In a result' should be 'As a result'), the overall flow remains clear and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use subject-specific terms like 'warranty,' 'invoice,' 'troubleshoot,' and 'presentation' correctly. There are a few minor collocation errors, such as 'internal order' (which is unclear in this context) and 'urgent prompt' (which is not a standard collocation). However, these errors do not impede communication. You are able to convey your meaning clearly and maintain a professional tone throughout the letter, which is sufficient for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'Since past one week' (should be 'For the past week') and 'In a result' (should be 'As a result'). Additionally, the phrase 'made an direct impact' contains an article error ('a' instead of 'an'). Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding. You show a good attempt at using varied sentence structures, which supports a solid score in this criterion.
