Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern with the equipment installed at my home by your company.

I recently installed an automatic cooktop in my kitchen by your company. Initially, it worked perfectly without causing any inconvininece. However, after a few days I observed that the cooktop was not heating up properly and after a few days it stopped working completely.

As I am working from home I usually have several meals like home-cooked snacks along with tea or coffee. Unfortunately, due to the defective cooktop I am surviving on one meal through out the day which I have to order from Zomato. Moreover, last night I went to my friend's house to have dinner which was embrassing.

I would like you to replace the cooktop with a new one of the same brand and price. Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you can find the defect and repair it by coming at my home. I would be greateful if you solve the issue as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Manmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the problem with the cooktop, explain the impact on your daily routine, and state your desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the 'problem' (e.g., error codes or specific sounds) to make the scenario more vivid. However, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task completely.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. To improve, ensure that the transition between the problem description and the impact on your work is smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'defective', 'inconvenience', and 'grateful'. There are a few spelling errors, such as 'inconvininece' (inconvenience), 'embrassing' (embarrassing), and 'greateful' (grateful). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to technical faults or customer service requests. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms will help you achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'coming at my home' (which should be 'coming to my home') and 'through out' (which should be one word, 'throughout'). Despite these small errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would further enhance your score.
