Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing a letter to express my dissatisfaction with the laptop, which I bought it last week from your shop. It is a faulty equipment.

I am Kira and I bought DELL laptop, model no;106, bill no: 1008 on last Saturday. Upon unboxing the laptop at home, I attempted to use keys and found that two of them are not working properly which keys are k and s. Moreover, laptop is suddenly switch off automatically which bothers me a lot during my work.

I am working from home because my company told me to do that and with this faulty laptop I can not be able to concentrate on my work also I am not able to finish my targets on time, which gives me a lots of stress and anxiety.

I would like to come and meet the manager on this Sunday as I have off that day. Also I would like to return the laptop and want my money back. I hope you understand my situation and help me to get my refund.

Thank you so much for your time and co-opration.

Yours Faithfully,

Kira Moss

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described (faulty keys and power issues), the impact on work is explained (inability to meet targets and stress), and the desired outcome is stated (refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands the situation immediately. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the 'targets' or the nature of your work to further develop the response, but all requirements of the prompt are met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'because', and 'Also' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary the sentence starters and use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect the sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple conjunctions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. You use relevant terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'faulty', and 'unboxing'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'switch off automatically' (should be 'switches off') and 'co-opration' (spelling error). The range is adequate but lacks the more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on accurate collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which I bought it' (redundant pronoun), 'can not be able to' (redundant modal usage), and 'a lots of' (should be 'a lot of'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses. Reducing these frequent, small errors will significantly enhance the clarity and professionalism of your writing.
