Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
My name is Mehali working as a software developer in our company for more than 5 years. Today,I am writing a letter to describe a problem with my PC from last 20 days. The screen provided by the company is not working properly and shutting down automatically. In addition it requires to be updated version of windows 10 for effective work too.
These two problems makes me so uncomfortable and inconvenient to do my consistent work. I am unable to focus on my project sometimes. Moreover, frequent shutting down of PC cause loss of my files on which I worked in past 10 days. Furthermore, I am unable to use the updated version of software application which I really needed for completion of our new project, deadline on this week.
Lastly, I would like to make you humble request to do repair or replacement of new PC as soon as possible. I hope you understand my concern and give me possible resolution. Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Mehali Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and requesting a resolution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the mention of the Windows update is slightly confusing, as it is unclear if this is a software requirement or a technical fault. The request for a 'new PC' is clear, but the letter could be improved by providing more specific details about the equipment model or purchase date to help the company identify the item.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the description of the problem and the impact on work could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'make you humble request' (should be 'make a humble request') and 'inconvenient to do my consistent work'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, there is limited use of less common or more precise vocabulary. The errors in word choice do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'from last 20 days' (should be 'for the last 20 days'), 'it requires to be updated version' (should be 'it requires an updated version'), and 'frequent shutting down... cause loss' (should be 'causes'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing after commas. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
