Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Kapoor,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the laptop which I purchased from your shop last month.
I have been using this laptop for a month on daily basis for my professional work. Recently, I experience plenty of problems with it. For instance, laptop shuts down during meetings without any notifications. Moreover, it required frequent charging, because battery is unable to hold charging for a long time. Also, internal systems freeze while using System one and other applications. Therefore, I feel frustrated and tired with this problems.
Due to these issues, it makes me unable to rejoin the business meeting and poses challenges during completing the projects. As I am the manager of my company, but storage and shuts down issues created difficulties to continue my ongoing work and send proper details and records to my boss. Overall, it reduce my productivity and damage my professional image over time.
I will appreciate it if you could send laptop repair technician for repairing purpose or exchange this laptop with fresh quality product within a short time.
I hope you consider my request and guide me effectively in order to resolve my problems. I look forward to your prompt response in this matter.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Twinkle

| Criterion | Band |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the technical issues clearly, explained the negative impact on your professional responsibilities, and provided a clear request for a resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for example, you could briefly mention the specific model of the laptop or the date of purchase to add more professional detail to your complaint.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition words such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Due to these issues' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure effectively guides the reader through your complaint.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'professional image' and 'prompt response' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'hold charging' (should be 'hold a charge') and 'fresh quality product' (which sounds slightly unnatural). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise technical or business-related collocations would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I experience plenty of problems' (should be 'have been experiencing'), 'it required frequent charging' (should be 'requires'), and 'send laptop repair technician' (missing an article). Additionally, there are some minor subject-verb agreement errors. Focusing on proofreading for articles and verb tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
