Student answer (Band 7.0)
numerical numbers do not work, taking extra time, to replace an item.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam, and I am writing you this letter in order to inform you that I recently bought one keyboard from your shop.
There is a problem that I have been dealing with for the last couple of days maybe 5 days now. The problem with the keyboard is number buttons, and they do not work properly.
Thus, I have to press little hard when I use these buttons, also in particular I bought this keyboard for working purpose. I work as an accountant, so I would have to use number keys every now and then. It is causing me a serious problem in my work, as my work due to this reason gets delayed by some few hours.
As a solution, I would request you to exchange or replace the keyboard as a courtesy. I am also sure, when I bought this item, it had 6 months of warranty.
I look forward to hear positive feedback on this problem.
Thank you, and have a pleasant day.
Sincerely,
Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly described the problem with the keyboard, explained how it impacts your work as an accountant, and stated your desired resolution (replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, explaining the impact on your work could be more detailed to show the severity of the issue. The opening sentence 'numerical numbers do not work...' is a bit disjointed and redundant as it repeats the core issue before the formal letter begins. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem, the impact, and the request. You use some cohesive devices like 'Thus' and 'As a solution' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'maybe 5 days now' and 'some few hours'. The transition between the initial summary sentence and the formal salutation is also confusing. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use relevant terms like 'warranty', 'exchange', and 'courtesy'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice or unnatural phrasing, such as 'working purpose' instead of 'professional use' or 'work-related tasks', and 'press little hard' instead of 'press quite hard'. The phrase 'numerical numbers' is redundant. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the range and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you this letter' (should be 'writing to you'), 'some few hours' (should be 'a few hours'), and 'I look forward to hear' (should be 'hearing'). Additionally, 'maybe 5 days now' is informal and lacks proper sentence structure. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on verb patterns (e.g., 'look forward to -ing') and preposition usage will improve your accuracy.
