Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to inform you regarding the laptop which was not operating properly while using for the office work.

As you know our company issued a laptop for work at home, I am operating this laptop for the last two years but have not faced any disruption. From last week, screen is getting blank and some keys are not functioning.

This issue is affecting my work and performance also which is unethical for the company because I am not able to accomplish my projects which are significant for the upcoming meetings. My performance is also being affected as I am extremely dedicated towards my work goals.

I would like to request to the company to fix this laptop or send me another device so that my performance would not be affected. I would deliver at nearest post office or if possible anyone from the IT department could visit my home and try to fix it quickly.

I look forward to hearing from you soon regarding this issue with my device.

Yours Sincerely,

Navpreet Dhillon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your work performance and project deadlines, and clearly stated your desired outcome (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could specify the nature of the projects or the specific deadline pressure you are facing to add more weight to your request. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'From last week' and 'This issue is' are functional but repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'as a result of these technical failures.' The paragraphing is appropriate, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'disruption,' 'unethical,' and 'accomplish.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'operating this laptop' is slightly unnatural; 'using this laptop' or 'working on this laptop' would be more idiomatic. Additionally, 'I would deliver at nearest post office' is missing a preposition and article. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise business-related collocations would elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the laptop which was not operating properly while using for the office work' (passive voice needed) and 'I would deliver at nearest post office' (missing 'the'). There are also some issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. To improve, focus on ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically sound and pay closer attention to prepositions and articles. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication.
