Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding my laptop you recently delivered.

I work from home for ABC company and last week, they decided change our old laptop to new brand, Dell though your company. As a result I got my new laptop on last Sunday. The problem is that it takes more time to start and saving files, making my work more difficult. Moreover, sometimes the laptop get stuck and takes time to refresh when it is in sleep mode.

As a data entry clerk in ABC company, I have to enter data more than 100 data sheets and save it different folders. At that time I am struggling to complete my work within my timeline they provided. Further more, I have to check my files while I am entering the data so my computer frequently going to sleep mode and it takes time to start.

I informed my manager regarding this matter, at that time he mentioned some of our other employees is also facing the similar situation. I would like to know the reasons for this and what would be the solution. If you cannot fix the problems I would like to ask for a replacement with other model.

I would be greatly appreciate if you can provide me a better solution for this matter. I look forward to your response at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Nipuni Rajapaksha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues with the laptop, explain the negative impact on your data entry work, and state your desired outcome (a fix or a replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the technical problem and the work impact is explained with slightly more precision, as some parts of the explanation, such as the sleep mode issue, are a bit repetitive. Overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'Further more' (note: this should be 'Furthermore'). While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact on your work could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more effectively to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'data entry clerk', and 'earliest convenience'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'decided change our old laptop to new brand' (should be 'decided to change our old laptops for a new brand') and 'I would be greatly appreciate' (should be 'I would greatly appreciate'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('to new brand'), incorrect verb forms ('laptop get stuck'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('some of our other employees is'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
