Student answer (Band 6.5)
I hope You are doing well. I am writing this letter because from past 2 days i am facing a problem in my printer.
When i try to print someting, some crackling sound starts in the printer. Later, after a moment it automatically prints the paper its it has some kind of lines all over which makes the text blurry.
So, most of my work is from home. I have to send copies to my colleagues everyday but due to this problem i am unable do my work. If you can send me a alternative printer until that it will be great.
As I get in touch with my manager he aslo gave the address of your shop. I am sending this to you by today and it will reach to you by 6 PM. I hope you will fix it as soon as possible.
please let me know if you require further information.
Yours faithfully
amrit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on your work, and stating your desired outcome. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the printer makes a 'crackling sound' and produces 'blurry' text, providing more specific details about the printer model or the nature of the lines would have strengthened the response. Additionally, the request for an 'alternative printer' is clear, but the logistics mentioned in the final paragraph are slightly confusing. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the ideas could be expanded for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the problem to the impact and finally the requested solution. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. You rely heavily on simple conjunctions like 'and' or 'so'. To improve, try using more sophisticated linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'therefore' to connect your sentences more fluidly. Some referencing is also slightly unclear, such as 'until that' in the third paragraph, which makes the sentence structure feel a bit mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'colleagues', 'information', and 'alternative' are used correctly. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'from past 2 days' (should be 'for the past two days') and 'get in touch with' (which is slightly informal for this context). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more specific technical or formal business terminology would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a alternative' should be 'an alternative'), prepositions, and verb tenses ('i am facing' vs 'i have been facing'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' and 'aslo'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
