Student answer (Band 6.5)
To Whom It may concern,
I am writing to complain about the recent concerns I have faced with the new printer I have bought from your company. When I try to take a printout I do not receive a perfect print, instead there are some black marks on the paper.
Prior to the issues the printer was performing well, however the issues started about a week ago when I had to take a large prints out about a 150 pages. Just after the completion, these issue started and ever since I am having trouble with my work. All my assignments and client work is getting delayed because of that.
Well, I have bought this printer about 3 months ago, so it is still under the company warranty. What I want you to do is to Give a new printer for some time while you take this away and fix it.
Thank you for consideration.
Kind regards,
Akash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the task: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and stating the desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how the printer affects work is brief, and the request for a replacement is phrased in a slightly informal manner ('Give a new printer for some time'). To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the nature of the 'black marks' or the specific type of work being delayed to fully develop the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the purpose of the letter to the problem, its impact, and finally the requested action. Paragraphing is present, though the paragraphs are quite short. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic (e.g., 'however', 'because of that'). While the progression of ideas is clear, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your thoughts more fluidly. The opening and closing salutations are appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'warranty' and 'assignments'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'take a printout' (better: 'print a document') and 'large prints out' (better: 'large print job'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on simple phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to office equipment and formal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have bought this printer about 3 months ago' (should be 'I bought'), 'these issue started' (should be 'these issues started'), and 'Thank you for consideration' (should be 'Thank you for your consideration'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on verb tense consistency and article usage will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
