Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter regarding the issue that I am currently facing with the laptop that I purchased from your store last month. I came to your Gurugram store last month and purchased a Dell Inspiron 15R laptop with the receipt number 143.
I am currently working from home and using my laptop for my job. I got an error on my laptop this morning saying that the hard disk is corrupted and I am unable to use the laptop. I was working on a very important project and the deadline for that project is in 3 days. Moreover, my promotion review is dependent on this project and failing to meet the deadline will cause serious problems for me.
I will be very grateful if you can send the technician over to my house by evening to fix the laptop so that I can continue working on my project. I urge you to please act upon my issue urgently.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours Sincerely
Tarunjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly described the problem with the laptop, explained the impact on your work, and stated the desired action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how the corrupted hard disk affects your project deadline and promotion review. This provides sufficient context for the reader to understand the urgency of the situation. The letter is well-structured and meets all requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraphs detail the problem and its consequences, and the final paragraph provides the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'so that' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text. There is no confusion in the sequence of events, making the letter easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'currently facing', 'corrupted', and 'prompt response' are used correctly and fit the formal context. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations. For instance, instead of 'get an error', you could use 'encountered a system error'. Overall, the language is natural and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The response shows a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'I will be very grateful if you can send the technician...'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence construction is clear. There are no major grammatical errors that hinder understanding. While the range of structures is sufficient, incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence forms (such as passive voice or conditional structures) would further enhance the quality of your writing. The current level is consistent and error-free for the most part.
