Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I bought a laptop from your company around eight moths ago. I am writing this letter to mention the problem I am facing with my laptop. I was working find until the last week when the notification came to update the device. I did as per the instruction however, since the time I updated it is acting up weird. Whenever, I try to open it blinks for some time then opened the window screen and shut down. I have tried multiple times but it is giving me the same issue.
My work totally depends on the screens. I work in trades so there are multiple tabs open in my screen which is getting difficult to manage through a single screen. My efficiency to complete the task has totally hampered.
I have checked it is still under my warranty period therefor I am requesting either the replacement or repair of my device. I can drop the device if need and hoping to pick up by coming Monday.
Yours sincerely,
Krupa.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the technical problem, explained the impact on your work, and clearly stated your desired outcome (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands both the nature of the malfunction and the urgency of the situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of how the problem affects your work is slightly more detailed, perhaps by mentioning specific software or deadlines that are being missed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however' and 'therefore', to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between the description of the problem and its impact on your work is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'warranty period', 'replacement', and 'device'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'moths' instead of 'months', 'find' instead of 'fine', and 'therefor' instead of 'therefore'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do suggest a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as these small slips prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully communicate your meaning, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'since the time I updated it is acting up weird' (should be 'it has been acting up strangely') and 'I can drop the device if need' (should be 'if needed'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the comma usage after 'Whenever'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of adverbs versus adjectives.
