Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
Hope this mail finds you well. Being a employee at your company I am writing this letter to request you about a solution for a problem I am facing since few weeks ago.
Actually, as you know I work from home from day one I joined this company, but from last few weeks I am facing difficult with the Wifi provided by your company. I am facing trouble connecting my laptop with the network.
This problem of internet is causing delays to complete office works on time. I have even missed many deadlines to submit my project work, as my laptop is not working. I even have to sometimes go to nearby computer labs to do my work on laptop, which is costing me a lots of money.
I request you if I can get new setup of a decent working network connection at my home as early as possible. I will send the details of my older internet connection for reference. I available during evenings to welcome installation techs.
Looking forward for your response.
Your's truly,
Kom

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and requesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly less standard than 'Dear Sir or Madam' as requested. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be more detailed. For instance, the specific nature of the technical fault is vague. However, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left in no doubt about the situation or the desired outcome, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.5-7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Actually', 'This problem', and 'As early as possible', which help the flow. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing is slightly underdeveloped. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in linking phrases would enhance the overall flow. The structure is sufficient to meet the requirements for a Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'installation techs' and 'reference', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request you about a solution' (should be 'request a solution from you') and 'facing difficult' (should be 'facing difficulty'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and word forms to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Being a employee' (should be 'an employee'), 'since few weeks ago' (should be 'for a few weeks'), and 'I available' (missing the verb 'am'). Punctuation is generally functional, though the closing 'Your's truly' contains an unnecessary apostrophe. While the errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.0, as the meaning remains clear despite the slips.
