Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about an item that I bought from your store. It is a Lenovo laptop which was suggested by one of your employee.
Its been 4 days I'm using this laptop and it work really great though, and its very fast and didn't lag but today it gets off by itself and didn't turned on. I've tried to charge it but the light symbol on the side shows its fully charged.
I had a very important meeting today which I had to attend by missed it because of the item. Also, my work submission deadline is coming closer which is the day after tomorrow.
I visited the store and explained all of my problem but didn't get any solution and put on hold. I've asked the store to give an exchange for the laptop or a full refund of the amount it was.
Waiting for your response.
yours faithfully
Charan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on your work, and stating your desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention missing a meeting and a deadline, expanding slightly on the nature of the work or the urgency would have provided a more comprehensive response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also' and 'but' to link ideas. However, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences and paragraphs more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'submission deadline', 'refund', and 'exchange'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'one of your employee' (should be 'employees') and 'gets off by itself' (should be 'shuts down'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. Focus on using more precise collocations to improve your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Its been 4 days I'm using' (should be 'I have been using this laptop for 4 days') and 'didn't turned on' (should be 'did not turn on'). These errors are frequent but do not generally impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will help you achieve a higher band score.
