Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am the manager of I&M Service Company. I am writing to you to discuss the problem which is faced by me recently with your supplies. As you know, my company always purchase envelopes from your shop. This time, I also got new boxes of envelopes a few days ago. But the quality of these envelopes is very low this time. The main issue is that the seal glue on the envelopes is of very low quality. I always use your envelopes to send important papers to my employees every day. These days, they are receiving them in an open condition because they are not properly sealed with the provided seal.
I hope you will understand my problem and provide me with a solution by exchanging them for envelopes made of better material. Please contact me as soon as possible to handle this issue to avoid any misunderstanding between our companies in the future.
General manager,
JAGROOP SINGH

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the problem (poor seal glue), explaining the impact (important papers arriving open), and requesting a solution (exchange). The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the communication is immediately obvious. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific details, such as the order number or the date of purchase, to make the request more professional and realistic. However, all requirements of the task are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific details and finally the requested action. Paragraphing is present, although the letter is quite short, which makes the structure feel slightly compressed. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The main issue is' and 'As you know', which help the flow. However, the transition between the problem description and the request could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are somewhat repetitive in their structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the issue clearly. Phrases like 'open condition' and 'provide me with a solution' are functional. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. There is a lack of more precise business-related vocabulary that would elevate the tone. For example, instead of 'very low quality', words like 'defective' or 'substandard' would be more appropriate. The word choice is accurate enough to avoid any confusion, but it does not demonstrate a wide or sophisticated range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the problem which is faced by me recently' (passive voice is a bit clunky here; 'the problem I have recently faced' would be better) and 'my company always purchase' (subject-verb agreement error: 'purchases'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence structures are sufficient to convey the message without impeding communication. Greater variety in complex sentence structures would improve the score.
