Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir
I am writing this letter to inform you about problem that I am having with wifi router at my house.
Actually, last year I purchased Telus company’s wifi connection from your shop. Since, it was working well and did not showed any trouble but from last few weeks, internet’s speed is troubling. As I work from home, so my job requires a good and stable network connection to communicate with customers. Due to unstable speed of internet sometimes I get unable to connect for my job which causes problems for my work schedule.
However, I already talked to customer service about this issue but I did not heard back anything so I decided to write to you about my concern. I want to request you to either change wifi router or may be check out previous one if it can be fix because my job is having problem due to unstable network.
I hope I will get a service for wifi connection soon so that I can continue my work. Thank you for your understanding.
Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and requesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how the problem affects work is brief, and the request for action could be more specific regarding the desired outcome (e.g., a technician visit or a replacement unit). While the task is fully addressed, the ideas could be expanded further to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of communication.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. There is a clear progression from the introduction of the problem to the impact and finally the request for action. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions such as 'Actually', 'However', and 'Due to' are used, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the paragraphing is basic. More varied linking words would improve the overall flow and coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'wifi router', 'stable network connection', and 'customer service'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'did not showed' (should be 'did not show') and 'can be fix' (should be 'can be fixed'). To reach a higher band, the writer should incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language related to technical issues.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'about problem' (missing article 'a'), 'did not showed' (incorrect verb tense after 'did'), 'internet’s speed is troubling' (awkward phrasing), and 'I did not heard' (incorrect verb form). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. Increasing the accuracy of verb tenses and articles would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
