Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this correspondence finds you in robust health.

The purpose of my writing is to update you about the problem I encountered while using the YETI microphone, which I recently purchased from your store. I'm unable to connect it with my MacBook M5 and the reason behind it is still unknown.

This is causing me a numerous trouble, as I work in 'InTouch Cx' as a Customer Service representative. The major part of job includes to stay on a call consistently. I'm assuming there's some technical issues which has occurred. I tried to resolve it on my end but I'm not an expert technician.

My product is still under the warranty period and I would like to exchange it with a new one or get it repaired. My preference is to get it replaced with the brand new. I'll provide you with all the transactions details if needed.

Kindly let me know if you need any further details from my side. I expect a prompt and speedy response from you in this matter.

Regards,

Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the technical issue with the YETI microphone, explained the negative impact on your role as a Customer Service representative, and clearly stated your desired outcome (replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific error messages or symptoms of the connection failure, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction of the problem to its impact and finally to the requested solution. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The purpose of my writing is' and 'Kindly let me know'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between the problem description and the impact on your work is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of your cohesive devices would enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'correspondence', 'robust', and 'warranty period' effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'causing me a numerous trouble' is grammatically incorrect and uses 'a' with a plural noun. Additionally, 'major part of job includes to stay on a call' is slightly unnatural; 'the majority of my work involves being on calls' would be more precise. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'a numerous trouble' (article/plurality error), 'major part of job includes to stay' (missing article and incorrect verb form), and 'there's some technical issues' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
