Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about the equipment which I use for my work from home.
I bought a modem from your shop on 1st august and the router's brand name is Wish. The serial number on the back of the box is XX[redacted phone]. Ever since installation the internet signals have been erratic. I have tried rebooting the modem various times but the issue still persist. After analysing the router, I have found circuit wires frayed because of which the router keeps troubleshooting.
The ongoing issue is causing me inconvenience. Hence, I cannot complete my daily tasks effectively due to which my performance has been impacted immensely.
I would like to request for a replacement urgently because I have an important project to complete by the end of this month. Moreover, the equipment has 30 days warranty period and I do have the original receipt. I hope you understand my situation and the problem is dealt with promptly.
Kind regards,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the problem (erratic signals and frayed wires), explained the impact on your work (inability to complete tasks and performance issues), and clearly stated your desired outcome (a replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing specific details such as the serial number and the warranty status, which adds credibility to your request. The letter is well-structured and follows the required format, ensuring the reader understands the situation and the necessary action immediately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the first introduces the issue, the second explains the impact, and the third provides the solution. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'Ever since' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow. There is a clear sense of purpose throughout the text, and the transition between the problem description and the requested action is seamless.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Terms like 'erratic', 'troubleshooting', and 'immensely' demonstrate a good command of language. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the terminology related to the equipment is used correctly. The language is appropriate for the context of a formal complaint, maintaining a professional tone throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, though there are a few minor slips. For instance, 'the issue still persist' should be 'persists' (subject-verb agreement), and 'request for a replacement' is slightly redundant as 'request a replacement' is more standard. Additionally, 'the router keeps troubleshooting' is an unusual collocation; 'the router keeps malfunctioning' or 'experiencing connection drops' would be more accurate. Despite these minor issues, your meaning is always clear, and your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally strong.
