Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I would like to address you about my Equipment which i bought last month from the shop. I bought laptop from the shop which is my daily use at home and even office.

I have been having issues with laptop like its not getting charged properly and have to keep every time on charging. When i remove the plug again percentage falls down. Moreover it is effecting my work because sometimes i have work from home so its very difficult for me to concentrate my online work.

My request to you is please change the piece because i have got warranty for one year. You can check everything if its damaged. It was just bought last month. I will appreciate if you could change laptop and if you can provide me a new piece because it is a regular use and do not want any further disturbance at my work.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the equipment problem, explaining the impact on work, and requesting a resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of how the problem affects work is limited to a brief mention of difficulty concentrating. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific detail about the nature of your work or the specific consequences of the laptop failure. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into three paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'Moreover' is used, but other parts of the text rely on simple sentence structures that lack smooth linking. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'address you about my Equipment', which is not standard phrasing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. You rely on basic terms like 'piece' and 'thing' rather than more specific terminology related to electronics or customer service. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'address you about my Equipment' (instead of 'write to you regarding a faulty product') and 'keep every time on charging'. To improve, focus on using more professional business terminology and ensuring that your word choices are natural in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include missing articles ('I bought laptop'), incorrect verb forms ('its not getting charged'), and punctuation errors. For example, 'its' is used incorrectly instead of 'it is' or 'it's'. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
